Jerry Kirby got his start working during summers restoring historic houses in Newport,RI. After graduating from Union College in 1980 he started his own company, Kirby Construction. The company’s first big job was a $38 million project in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where they restored Captain Samuel Sears’ historic waterfront home and built 68 custom residences. When that project was complete Jerry moved to California to build the 12-meter sailboat “Eagle” for the 1987 America’s Cup. After competing in the America’s Cup Jerry returned to Newport bringing the experience of competing in the America’s Cup and the discipline of boat building back to Kirby Construction. In 1987 Jerry’s brother-in-law, Tom Perkins, joined the firm as a foreman and estimator. Tom moved to Newport from Vail, Colorado, where he was working in the construction industry. In 1997 Tom became a partner and Kirby Perkins Construction was born.
